First, some background.
I’m currently 23, and I’ve been shooting with film SLRs since the age of 6. My dad has always been a camera nut, and thus, I became one too. While I would never say any of my old models were “pro” (mostly old Minolta models), they were still an SLR, and as a result, they were a great lesson on photography growing up. As I got older, I became interested in filmmaking and purchased a Panasonic DVX100 video camera, which was a fantastic piece of equipment. I held on to it for about 4 years, and did many projects with it.
NOW, when I first heard all the business about DSLRs and video modes, I scoffed. I instantly thought about the video mode on my crummy old point and shoot, which is, in so many words, awful. Then I saw footage. Incredible! It took me a while to be completely sold, but eventually I was ready to sell my beloved DVX to purchase a DSLR. I finally, after much debate (mostly between the 7d and the GH1), I settled on the Canon 7d.
This camera is great. I’ve been wanting to get back into still photography again, and this is my first DSLR, so I’m excited for that, on top of the video mode. Both have performed to my expectations, sometimes beyond. The body feels extremely rugged, and the weight makes you realize it’s not some cheapy plastic. I guess the easiest way to not make this review 10 pages would be a pro and con list, so here we go:
PROS:
-Feels very rugged, yet comfortable. I’m not so paranoid about having it out in scenarios that would have made me nervous with my DVX
-Still quality is great
-Auto-focus seems good, but I’ve really never taken much to auto-focus, so I’m probably not the best authority to talk on this. It’s very fast, but I prefer manual control in most situations.
-Live view is great in still and video mode. The zoom function is something that I’ve found invaluable for focusing.
-HD video is amazing. Moving from SD to HD was a huge bump from the DVX, and I love the quality, sharpness, and detail. Dynamic range is much nicer than the DVX as well.
-Battery life is better than expected
-Didn’t buy the kit lens, but the Canon 50mm 1.4 works great on this body and delivers wonderful results.
CONS
-As I mentioned, I’ve used SLRs before, and tinkered with some other DSLRs before, so the learning curve for me was mostly finding what settings are where, but I can see the learning curve being fairly steep for a complete new comer.
-Anyone interested in the video mode who has done even a small bit of research knows of some of the limitaons of the camera (rolling shutter, “jello” effect, etc). These are annoyances, but something I’m willing to put up with considering the overall quality and price point
-Photography, as I tend to forget from time to time, is an EXPENSIVE hobby. Lenses, battery grips, stabilization systems (for video), tripods, etc. The costs DO add up, so make sure you’re committed to the craft before you get started, otherwise you’ll be disappointed how quickly you can pour money into this stuff (I assume most people realize this, but always good to mention, even though it’s not at all specific to the 7d).
Well, I think that’s more or less it. I love the camera so far and have no regrets about my purchase. Look forward to using it on some upcoming projects!

This camera was a big purchase for me and I have not regretted it for an instant. In 9 months I have taken 3000 pictures. For image quality, ease of use, and ability to utilize a range of lenses this camera is tops. Even the cheap kit lens (18-55) is a fantastic value.
Here’s what I like:
Small and lightweight for an DSLR – I packback so weight and volume are important to me. This is a smaller and lighter pkg than other similar cameras.
The fabulous screen. It is a total knockout. Altho I haven’t had the opportunity to use it as such yet, I want to use this camera for astrophotography. Focusing on stars can be a trick but this camera’s hi res screen at 10x should allow great focus.
Qualty of the pictures is first rate. I’ve read about the soft-focus complaints, banding, poor color handling etc. I have not found any of this to be true. When compared with the output from Nikons taken at the same time on the same trip (and in fact significantly more expensive Canons) I see the difference is primarily in the users ability – not in the camera’s capability.
Lens selection and quality – Canon and varous second tier manufacturers offer a great range of capability out there. I’m sure Nikons offer about the same but for slection and bang for the buck, the Canon line is excellent.
What would I like to see and don’t. Where’s my articulated screen?
I’d recommend this camera to anyone. It is a fabulous value.

I bought this camera for a photography class that I took over the summer at my university. While many of the Students bought traditional student models, like the Pentax k1000, I wanted to buy a more updated model. The Canon Rebel EOS K2 went above and beyond by expectations; it was easy to use, had multiple useful features, and produced amazing photographs. The best part about this camera is that a user can not only set an aperture/shutter speed, but select a mode where the camera itself will automatically select the appropriate details – the feature is very useful. Also, the camera has specific automatic modes that are designed for shooting close-ups, landscapes, moving objects, and low-lite subjects, which is very useful for novice-photographers. I was planning on selling it to some friends after I finished the class, but am now considering keeping it for taking more photos for fun.

This kit is great, all the products are perfect and will certainly expand the camera’s usability. Memory card, memory USB reader and extra battery are absolutely things you must have. There are also 8 an 16 GB versions of his kit, personaly I prefere this one. 4GB will let you take lots of pictures, extra 4GB cards are cheap and you will not be putting all the eggs on the same basket (SD will sometimes fail). The bag is also esential to Protect the camera and even though it certainly is a little over sized that will also provide you enough space to expand your kit with extra lenses and even an extra body if you are really looking foward to take fotografy seriously. (It is true, you might want to buy a smallest bag just to carry the body and one of the lenses if you know you will not be using all the other stuf).
the kit lens (18-55) is a great all ocation lens the IS sistem is great will help you a lot on handheld shoots.
70-300 lens is also great but, if you are taking fotography seriusly, you will eventually change it, to a better lens. It is great for people who start in telephotography but specially on it’s 300mm it creates a little color distortion, not enough to have in count on normal-zice prints, but if you are willing to crop your pictures and make huge
copies you will notice it a little.
Finally, I think a pair of UV or Polarized fiters will be great. Those will protect your lences and will help you get better pics in the outside, I will recomend any one to buy a couple of those (58mm will fit both lenses) to protect the lenses from getting scratched.

I wanted to wait until I used the Camera before writing the review. The main reason I bought this camera is as a “step up” from my point-and-shoot Panasonic that always performed well for me and I will continue to use for some photos, but I wanted to be able to use different lenses and also have access to the RAW photo format. RAW images can be worked over with Photoshop (which I haven’t bought yet) and are very large files holding much more data about the image than the point-and-shoot jpeg photo image files. You cannot edit jpeg images (that I know of). I attended a seminar given by Rick Sammon, a professional photographer, and was in awe of the things he can do with an image (correct all colors so the sky is not washed out to nothing, for example- Google his web page or YouTube for photography instruction). I am working my way toward richly colored images, and away from the kind of pictures we all take on vacation where the skies are not as wonderful as we remembered, the trees are not as green, you know….
I mainly photograph outdoor scenes, landscapes, wildflowers, nature scenes and also people-story images. I wanted a camera with different lenses for wide angle landscapes and also a telephone lens for animal and people close ups (without being close up). The package I bought from Cameta Camera through Amazon came with an 18-55mm lens and also a 75-300 lens. The lenses just screw on and off. Now then, the GOODIE BAG that came with this package from Cameta included a really nice camera “gadget” bag that holds the camera, lenses, extra cords, batteries, and there is room to spare. The bag I got is well made (I read some reviews about a cheap bag, mine is wonderful). ALSO I GOT an 8 gig card to use in the camera, I can take photos till the cows come home and not run out of room, even in the RAW giant sized photo image file. ALSO I received two camera batteries with a recharger, so I will never run out of power in the middle of the day. I ALSO received a card reader which makes it very easy to remove the card from the camera, plug it in the reader and then directly into my computer USB port, I never even had to install any software on my MAC, just plug in and download the images. This is the kind of little stuff that really adds up after you have decided to buy a camera and sort of deflates your concept of getting a good deal. I recommend buying the “outfit” as it is more painless way to commit to your purchase, plus you will need this stuff anyway and save some $$.
The camera was ready to use out of the box – just insert card and battery and that’s all. There is a dial with pre-set functions to take landscapes, macro, portrait shots, shutter priority or aperature priority, but if you want to you can also manually adjust whatever you want to, the ISO, etc. I am still learning about how to choose these options but am not shanghaied until I finish my education. I opened the box in the evening, put the battery in the camera, screwed on the telephoto lens and took a photo of a painting in the next room, pretty much in the dark, and was amazed that the focus was so clear, and the flash just right. Amazed. This is not something you can do with a point-and-shoot.
One thing I have noticed is that the focus you see in the view finder is ACCURATE. There are red lights showing the EXACT area the lens is focused on, and if you move the camera and therefore the focus, you might not get the shot you want. For instance, I was out in a duck blind with the telephoto lens on, the camera was set to take photos continuously, and I was capturing images of ducks coming in to land on the lake water. Since the ducks were moving, and I was following them with the camera the red dots in the viewfinder were not always squarely on the flying ducks, so I was not always focusing directly on the duck. If you are not taking images of moving things, no problem. Just a head’s up, you need to be accurate with your pointing of the lens, the camera will do it’s job as you instruct it. I took 535 images over a couple of hours and the card and battery were no where near capacity. Later I was taking photos of some little kids driving wildly around in the yard in a mule, they were larger and easier to get the focus dots pegged on, and they came out perfectly in focus.
All in all, this camera, lenses, and goodies package was money well spent for me. I would recommend shopping with Cameta? Camata? Camera through Amazon (they must have set up a “package deal” between themselves). Shipping was fast, everything received was as expected. If you want to go beyond the point-and-shoot type photo but are boggled with all the brands and choices like I was, and don’t want to spend too much money on the wrong thing like I didn’t want to, look for a package deal such as this one.
